Elizabeth’s heart pounded until she thought it would burst. She raced across the chamber asking Gertrude, ‘How is she?’

The exhausted midwife handed her the baby. ‘I am sorry, my lady. I have done my best.’

For one throbbing heartbeat, she thought Gertrude meant the baby was dead. But Lysette coughed and Elizabeth released her breath on a cry.

After bidding Gertrude to get some rest, she unwrapped the baby, noting that while the normally pale flesh was flushed, there didn’t seem to be the raging fever she’d expected.
